"Halt! This is the police!" blared a megaphone. Police cars sped, siren screaming, to the front of the dilapidated apartment complex. Men in uniform jumped out of the cars and ran into the building with their guns drawn. Just to the side of the door, a man lay at the bottom of the staircase with a broken neck and several deep gashes on his body.
From the floors above came muffled thumps and a scream. The officers rushed up the stairs to the second floor. A trail of carnage led them down the hall to the last room on the left. There were gouges in the walls and bullet holes. Two more people were slumped over in pools of blood. They were covered in cuts and strange puncture wounds. Neither was breathing.
The police trained their guns on the smashed door of room 31.
"This is the police! Come out with your hands up!" an officer shouted into the room. When they were greeted only by silence, two officers stormed into the room.
"They went out the window!" shouted Chief Hidlen. "Check the alley
